How to Get to Koh Samet From Bangkok

Ready for a weekend break to Koh Samet, one of the loveliest islands within driving distance of Bangkok? This guide will help you find your way from Bangkok to Koh Samet.

Koh Samet is a small island in the southeastern part of Thailand located 200km from Bangkok city. Getting to the island requires a boat from one of the Piers in Ban Phe, Rayong. Transport options to the Ban Phe from Bangkok include renting a car, private taxi, minivan, and bus.   

The island is popular with tourists and locals alike because of its easy access from Bangkok and Pattaya.  Koh Samet is a national park, so there is a fee upon arrival.

How to get to Koh Samet from Bangkok by taxi

The most convenient way to get to Koh Samet from Bangkok is by private taxi.  The drive takes around 2-3 hours and will cost in the range 2,000-3,000 Baht.

To order a taxi, you need to prebook from a private taxi company or use the Grab app. If you hail a local Bangkok city taxi, they are unlikely to accept your ride because of the distance, although you may get lucky.

How to get to Koh Samet from Bangkok by minivan

If you’re traveling in a group to Koh Samet, a minivan is ideal because it can hold up to 10 people.  The drive takes around 2-3 hours and will cost in the range of 200 Baht each.

A shared minivan service to Ban Phe runs hourly from 7 am to 6 pm departing from Bus Terminal Eastern in Ekkamai accessible by BTS. The minivan driver may make multiple stops along the way because locals also use the service.

Luxury tip

Want to be picked up from your residence in Bangkok? Private minivans can be booked through a taxi agency, hotel reception, or by using the Grab app. The price will range from 3,000 to 4,000 Baht.

How to get to Koh Samet by bus

The cheapest way to get to Koh Samet from Bangkok is by bus at Bus Terminal Eastern in Ekkamai, which departs every hour from 7 am to 6 pm.  The bus trip will take up to 4 hours and costs 150 Baht per person.

There is a package deal that includes a single bus ticket to Ban Phe and a return ferry Ban Phe to Koh Samet for 280 Baht per person.

To get to Bangkok Bus Terminal Eastern, take the BTS to Ekkamai. Take the exit label number 2, then walk to the nearest 7-Eleven, and turn left.

The bus will drop you off at Nuan Thip Pier, where you’ll find the boats to Koh Samet.

How to get to Koh Samet from Bangkok Airport

Suvarnabhumi

Getting to Ban Phe from Suvarnabhumi International Airport is possible by bus or taxi.

Bus

The bus terminal at Suvarnabhumi has routes to Bangkok Terminal Eastern in Ekkamai, where you can transfer for a bus to Ban Phe (see times below).

Suvarnabhumi also has bus routes to Rayong; once there, you’ll need to get a minivan or taxi to Ban Phe.

Taxi

There are lots of taxi options at Suvarnabhumi, including private and local.  If you’re booking a local taxi, check with the driver to see if they are willing to travel to Ban Phe.

Hire Car

Another option to get to Ban Phe form the airport is hiring a car from one of the hire companies found in the arrivals area at the Aiport. Options include Hertz, Avis, and Budget.

Once in Ban Phe you can park at one of the pier car parks and pick up the car once return from Koh Samet.

Don Mueang

The only option to Koh Samet from Don Mueang is by direct taxi to Ban Phe or taxi to Terminal Eastern in Ekkamai then transfer to a bus going to Ban Phe.

Best way to get from Bangkok to Koh Samet

The best way to get from Bangkok to Koh Samet is by private taxi.  Other modes of transport are cheaper but will take longer because of multiple stops along the way.

To ensure additional safety, I would recommend using the Grab app. The app lets you can pick a specific vehicle type and has onboard safety features such as a panic button.

Getting to Koh Samet when you arrive at Ban Phe

To get to Koh Samet Island from Ban Phe, you need to take a boat from piers Ban Phe, Nuan Thip, or Phe. Boat selection includes the slower wooden ferry, fast ferry, or a speedboat.

Fast Ferry to Koh Samet – Catamaran Boat

The fast ferry run by Khokaew Phitsadan has an airconditioned cabin and can hold up to 74 passengers.  The 10-minute jounrey from Ban Phe Pier to Na Dan Pier (Koh Samet) operates every day of the week from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm.

Tickets cost 150 Baht/person one-way and 300 Baht/person return.

If you intend to bring a motorbike on board, it’s an additional 50 Baht per trip. Motorcycles are also hirable on the island.

Slow Ferry to Koh Samet – Wooden Boat

The wooden ferry found at Nuan Thip Pier has drop-offs at various locations on Koh Samet, including Na Dan Pier, Ao Wong Duan, Ao Wai, and Ao Kui.  The journey takes around 40 to 45 minutes and costs 50 to 100 Baht for a single ticket and 100 to 200 Baht for return.

Speedboat to Koh Samet

Shared speedboats operate from Nuan Thip Pier and can hold up to 10 passengers, only leaving the pier when full.  The speedboat will take passengers to their desired beach on the island. Prices range from 200-500 Baht single and 400-1000 Baht return.
