Private pool vs pool access: how to tell before you book

Updated 27 October 2026

Quick answer

A private pool is used only by the guests in your room or villa. A "pool access", "swim-up" or "lagoon access" room opens straight onto a pool that neighbouring rooms share. Hotels name rooms loosely, so check three things before you pay: the exact room name on the hotel's own website, whether the description says "private pool" (not just "pool"), and whether the photos show one pool for one terrace.

What the room names usually mean

There is no industry standard for these terms, and the same words can mean different things at different hotels. The table shows how they are most often used, and where you should check before booking.

How to check before you book

  1. 1

Find the exact room name on the hotel's own website

Booking sites often shorten or rename rooms. Match the name you are about to book with the hotel's accommodation page.

  2. 2

Look for "private" and "pool" together

Wording such as "private pool" or "own pool" is a good sign. "Pool access", "lagoon" or a pool mentioned only as a resort facility usually means it is shared.

  3. 3

Read the photos, not just the headline image

A single pool beside one terrace suggests it is private. A long ribbon of water running past several doors and sun loungers is shared.

  4. 4

    Check for a pool size

Hotels that offer private pools often publish the dimensions. A size such as 8 x 4 m also tells you whether you can swim or only cool off.

  5. 5

    Check how private it is

A private pool can still be overlooked by a path, a beach or upper floors. Walled or screened pools suit couples who want to swim without being seen.

  6. 6

Book that room type, not the hotel's cheapest rate

Private pools are usually limited to specific categories. Make sure the room you select on the booking site is the one with the pool.

  7. 7

If in doubt, ask the hotel in writing

Ask: "Is the pool in this room used only by the guests staying in it?" A written answer is useful if the room is not what you expected.

Every room on Find You There has a pool reserved for that booking. We then record the pool type, the size when the hotel publishes it, and how private it is: "Enclosed" for walled or screened pools, "Open View" for pools that face a view and may be seen from outside.

Questions travellers ask

Is a "pool access" room the same as a private pool?

Usually not. Pool access normally means your terrace leads straight into a pool that other rooms also use. Look for the words "private pool" in the room description.

Is a plunge pool private?

A plunge pool attached to a room or villa is usually for that room only, but it is small. Check the size if you want to swim rather than cool off.

Does "pool villa" always mean a private pool?

Often, but not always. Some hotels use "pool villa" for villas beside a shared pool. Read the room description on the hotel's own website or ask the hotel.

Can people see into a private pool?

Sometimes. Pools facing the sea, a beach or a valley can be visible from outside. If privacy matters, look for walled or screened pools; we mark these as "Enclosed".
